The African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) is a continental organization that deals with the harnessing, uptake and utilization of remote sensing, space science and geospatial technology to address Africa’s contemporary challenges for the benefit of society.

The organization was founded 1992 in the USA and incorporated as an international Non-Government Organization (NGO) under Section 21 of the South African Companies Act 61 of 1973 (Company registration No.2008/029110/08) in 2008. AARSE is a membership-based organization with some 120 African and international members coming from university departments and research organizations, government agencies, the private sector and non-profit organizations.

AARSE is associated with more than 30 national societies, several space agencies and over 200 international organizations involved in satellite remote sensing and space activities, such as;

  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
  • European Space Agency (ESA)
  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
  • Algerian Space Agency (ASAL)
  • National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS, Egypt)
  • National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA, Nigeria)
  • South African National Space Agency (SANSA).
  • AARSE is a partner of international scientific societies such as
    • The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS)
    • The IEEE Geosciences and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS)
    • The European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL)
    • EIS-Africa

AARSE is a participating organization in the Group on Earth Observation (GEO). As a member of UN-ECA’s Executive Working Group on Geo-information, AARSE contributed to the erstwhile UN-ECA Committee on Development Information, Science and Technology (CODIST) and has observer status at the UN-Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
