The advent of low cost, reliable, user-friendly and lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and structure from motion (SfM) image processing software solutions has created new and unparalleled opportunities for collecting timely, detailed and high-quality geospatial information for disaster risk assessment, mitigation, and management, agricultural monitoring, crop type mapping, land tenure, wildlife monitoring and anti-poaching efforts.

In this context this session invites abstracts regarding the development and use of UAVs for environmental and agricultural monitoring as well as disaster risk assessment and response in urban as well as rural areas  in Africa. Desired research and applications include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Flood risk mapping in urban and rural areas
  • Disaster and hazard mapping:  flooding, landslides and other calamities
  • Agriculture: Detection of crop types and mapping of cropped areas
  • Monitoring of agricultural management techniques and interventions
  • Wildlife monitoring
  • Anti-poaching
  • Other applications
