Jide Kufoniyi - AARSE President

I hereby cordially invite you to the 11th International Conference of the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) holding in Kampala, Uganda from 24th to 28th October 2016.

The theme of this conference, ‘Our Earth, Our Heritage: Harnessing geospatial technologies for achieving sustainable development goals in Africa’ has been carefully chosen to (again) emphasise the vital role of geospatial data and information in achieving the new post-2015 sustainable development goals (SDG).

The sub-themes include: Space and Earth observation technology for the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDG); Management of Big Data and Spatial Data Infrastructure; From climate observation to climate change adaptation; Human capital development in geospatial science; Cities and Demographic Transitions; Disaster risk reduction and resilience; Geospatial science and technology for Water and watershed management; and Conflict management, human security and peace-building.

The biennial conference is one of the objectives of AARSE within its primary aim of increasing the awareness of African governments and their institutions, the private sector and the society at large, about the empowering and enhancing benefits of developing, applying and utilizing responsibly, the products and services of Earth Observation Systems and Geo-information Technology.

The AARSE international biennial conference is conducted in even- numbered years, usually in the last week of October, across Africa on various relevant topics of Earth Observation and Geospatial Information Sciences apart from other awareness and capacity building activities. Up to the year 2014, AARSE has organized ten (10) of such conferences in Harare (Zimbabwe) in 1996, Abidjan (Cote D’Ivoire) in 1998, Cape Town (South Africa) in 2000, Abuja (Nigeria) in 2002, Nairobi (Kenya) in 2004, Cairo (Egypt) in 2006, Accra (Ghana) in 2008, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) in 2010, El-Jadida (Morocco) in 2012 and Johannesburg (South Africa) in 2014. The 11th conference is taking place in the beautiful city of Kampala, Uganda in October 2016.

The international conference brings together over 600 scientists, practitioners, vendors of products and government officials from various countries across the globe with the objective of promoting the advancement of knowledge, research, development, education and training in space science and technology including photogrammetry, remote sensing and geospatial information sciences and their applications in sustainable development.

The week-long conference will feature technical plenary, special sessions, parallel sessions consisting of oral and interactive paper presentations, pre- and post-conference workshops, scientific and commercial exhibitions of services and latest equipment, social events and tours, and the AARSE General Assembly.

The conference also provides a great opportunity for tourism; with the beautiful tourist centres in Kampala and other parts of Uganda, participants will definitely enjoy attending this conference.

I encourage all stakeholders in Earth observation and geospatial science and technology to participate in this AARSE biennial Conference, which provides an opportunity for participants to learn about new developments in the above mentioned disciplines and to share experiences with others. I also look forward to meeting again all AARSE partners from the industry, academia, government agencies and the private sector.

President, AARSE
